The predictive value of a body shape index as a novel obesity metric for cancer risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis
October 10, 2025
CONCLUSION: ABSI demonstrates remarkable specificity for specific cancer types in cancer risk prediction. It independently predicts CRC risk, particularly in identifying high-risk male populations with central adiposity, serving as a beneficial supplementary tool to WC rather than a substitute. Available evidence does not support the routine application of ABSI for predicting prostate or breast cancer […]

Vitamin D deficiency, supplementation, and colorectal cancer outcomes: interactions with obesity and risk profiles
September 29, 2025
BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency, colorectal cancer, and tumor progression are increasingly linked in recent research. Beyond its well-established roles in bone metabolism and immune regulation, vitamin D has emerged as a potential modulator of cancer prevention and prognosis, particularly in colorectal cancer, where deficiency may worsen outcomes.

Microenvironmental determinants of cancer progression during obesity: emerging evidence and novel perspectives
September 24, 2025
Obesity is a global pandemic representing a significant public health threat, with a rising number of affected individuals and numerous associated co-morbidities, including cancer. In obese cancer patients, higher mortality rates are usually observed compared to normal weight/lean individuals. The imbalanced metabolic asset of obese patients fosters tumor growth and its progression by impacting not […]

Targeting fatty acid-binding protein 4: A therapeutic intersection of obesity and cancer via lipid metabolism
September 11, 2025
Fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) has emerged as a multifunctional regulator in cancer biology, linking dysregulated lipid metabolism, immune modulation, and tumor progression. Initially recognized for its role in fatty acid transport and lipid homeostasis, FABP4 is now understood as a secreted adipokine that influences diverse oncogenic processes, particularly in adipose-rich tumor microenvironments. It is […]

Obesity management in the setting of endometrial cancer and hyperplasia: A narrative review
September 8, 2025
Obesity is a well-established risk factor for endometrial cancer, driven by chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and excess estrogen. As the global obesity epidemic continues to worsen, effective weight management plays a crucial role in reducing both incidence and progression. Recent pharmacotherapy advancements, particularly GLP-1 receptor agonists, show promising weight loss effects by modulating appetite and […]

Mammary adipose dysfunction in the dual epidemic of obesity and breast cancer
September 3, 2025
Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of death among women, with obesity being a significant factor. Mammary adipose tissue (MAT) dysfunction in obesity creates a tumor-supportive environment, leading to increased risk. In obesity, MAT undergoes significant changes, including increased adiposity, chronic inflammation, aromatase overexpression, insulin resistance, and altered adipokine signaling, collectively fostering […]

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in Breast Cancer: A New Frontier in Obesity and Prognosis Management
August 28, 2025
Obesity is a well-established risk factor for both the incidence and poorer clinical outcomes of Breast Cancer (BC), particularly among hormone receptor-positive postmenopausal women. However, conventional weight loss interventions have yielded limited success in altering cancer prognosis. Recently, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, have emerged as effective pharmacologic agents […]

Oncogenic effects of ECM remodeling in obesity and breast cancer
August 23, 2025
Extracellular matrix (ECM) components are key regulators in breast cancer progression, as ECM remodeling is essential for breast cancer cells to invade into surrounding tissue. This process is characterized by the alignment of fibrillar collagens, breakdown of basement membrane components, and increased interstitial collagen stiffness. In patients with obesity, pre-existing ECM changes, including excessive collagen […]

Evaluating the influence of the obesity paradox on survival outcomes in patients being treated surgically for rectal cancer-a systematic review and meta-analysis
August 18, 2025
CONCLUSION: Once diagnosed and being treated with curative intent for rectal cancer, patients living with obesity exhibit similar survival outcomes as those living without obesity. This study refutes hypotheses that an 'obesity paradox' is protective for survival in patients with rectal cancer. Given the current obesity epidemic, this concept may warrant incorporation into preoperative counselling.

Obesity and gastrointestinal cancer: A converging epidemic with surgical consequence
August 16, 2025
Obesity is now a recognised carcinogen with growing implications for gastrointestinal surgical oncology. Excess adiposity promotes tumourigenesis through endocrine, inflammatory, and mechanical pathways, contributing to increased cancer incidence, stage at diagnosis, and worse oncological outcomes. For patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery, obesity adds significant technical complexity and elevates perioperative morbidity. While effective interventions such as […]
